How will I know if therapy is working?

At Two Chairs,

We know that our clients’ goals are to feel better. To make sure that happens as quickly as possible, we use your feedback to help track progress. This approach is called measurement-based care (MBC). Each week before your therapy session, you’ll complete what’s called a mental health check-in: a brief survey with questions about how therapy is going.

Your and your therapist will discuss these check-ins together. These conversations facilitate communication about how things are going in care for you, including whether or not you’re making progress toward feeling better. Over time, the data from your mental health check-ins will help you and your therapist develop a sense of your progress in therapy: not just your symptoms, but also your quality of life and even the relationship between you and your therapist. Your therapist can use this data to make changes to your treatment to lead to better outcomes faster.

The amount of time needed for therapy to work can vary based on your specific concerns and needs. The key is making sure you and your therapist circle back on how sessions are going. Asking for regular feedback and truly engaging in your treatment is a solid way to understand what your treatment timeline looks like and align on your goals with your therapist.
